We Don’t Need Royal Tourists

The British Monarchy is often sent to faraway places to strengthen ties with its former empire. But it has gone very badly wrong in the Caribbean.

When Prince William and Kate Middleton arrived in Belize, they tried to land by helicopter in disputed land claimed by local people, they were met by big protests.

They then tried to fly into Jamaica, but its political leaders rejected their request to visit citing the history of British colonialism.

In an open letter, they wrote,

‘We see no reason to celebrate the 70-year ascension of your grandmother to the British throne because we believe her leadership, and that of her predecessors, have perpetuated the greatest human rights tragedy in the history of humankind.’

What a shame then it is to see the fawning of the mainstream Irish media over the visit of Prince Charles to Tipperary and Waterford.

The British state has for centuries imposed death and destruction on Ireland in his family’s name.

Prince Charles is also the Colonel in Chief of the Parachute Regiment which was involved in the Bloody Sunday murders.

So why the obsequious media coverage?
