Protest Calling For Council To Reject Coal Processing Plant Request

People Before Profit councillors Shaun Harkin and Eamonn McCann support local residents demanding the application by A&N Fuels NI to process and screen coal at the Bay Road in Derry, be rejected.

“Derry has already been identified as an area with dangerously high levels of fine particle pollutants. A coal processing plant within the city will only exasperate this situation, exposing local residents and those who work in the area to greater risk with further damaging consequences to our environment.

Following a successful motion by People Before Profit, Derry City and Strabane District council has already agreed to take action to address the environmental disaster and climate emergency our world is facing. This motion committed the council to move Derry and Strabane away entirely from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources.

If council is to stay true to that pledge and its declaration of a climate emergency, this application must be rejected.

You can register your objection by writing a letter or emailing the Environment and Neighbourhoods Team, Derry and Strabane District Council, 98 Strand Road, BT48 7NN or environmentandneighbourhood[email protected]

All those opposed to the processing and screening of coal within the city are invited to attend the socially-distanced protest at Bay Road, Monday 24th August, 4pm.”
