People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll will host a public meeting tonight at 7pm at St Comgall's (Divis Street) on the lessons of the Garvaghy Road. Speakers include Breandán Mac Cionnaith, Anne Cadwallader and Aamor Crofts.
Gerry Carroll said:
“A month ago, the Parades Commission, the courts and the British state all lined up behind an Orange march down the Garvaghy Road. It never happened because a working class community said no and held its ground. Thousands came from across Ireland to stand with them."
“Now comes the predictable backlash, with elected reps being called for police interviews in an attempt to criminalise an entire community for refusing to bow its head. On top of that, unionist and loyalist spokespeople have spent weeks peddling scare stories."
“Unionist elites have nothing to offer working class communities but division. Garvaghy showed the alternative: when people organise together, they win. That’s the foundation of the new Ireland we need, built by and for working people - not one carved up between orange and green elites."
Speakers:
- Breandán Mac Cionnaith has led the Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition for three decades.
- Anne Cadwallader is a journalist, author and human rights campaigner who exposed collusion between loyalist killers and the British state.
- Aamor Crofts is a Garvaghy Road resident and political activist.
