Suspend Healthcare Profiteering; Executive Must Bring Private Hospitals Into The Health Service

People Before Profit Cllrs Shaun Harkin and Eamonn McCann have pledged to raise the following proposal at today’s full meeting of Derry & Strabane Council:

“Council calls on the Stormont Executive to immediately bring private care hospitals into public control and under the direction of the health service as an emergency response to ease the burden on our overwhelmed health service and health workers; to ensure the health service has the available beds, capacity and staff to care for all those sick with covid; and, in order to carry out all Red Flag cancer surgeries, and, all other vital operations and life-saving procedures.”

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin said,

“We believe this is the urgent action that’s necessary. It’s the the kind of radical proposal that can unite communities instead of dividing them. This will actually help to save our health service and lives. It will help nurses and health workers get through the immense pressures they’re being subjected to.

Doing this will make sure people in desperate need of medical care receive it. This is the kind of action that has been done elsewhere.
Healthcare should never be a site for profiteering. The Executive must act now and suspend health profiteering during the pandemic emergency.”
