People Before Profit MLA Calls For Stormont Summer Recess To Be Cut Short

Speaking as he urged the Executive to end Stormont’s summer recess in a bid to get a grips with a spike in COVID-19 cases, Gerry Carroll MLA stated:

“We have seen a tenfold increase in COVID-19 cases since the beginning of July and a spike in deaths. This dangerous rise commands urgent action, and I am calling on the Executive to cut short the Assembly’s summer recess so that we can address it.

“If we have learned anything from the first wave of COVID-19,  it is that swift action can save lives. I have been deeply concerned that restrictions have been eased too readily to reinvigorate the economy, and that this recent spike is a direct result. We must act urgently to prevent further spread of this virus, and put the health of our communities first.

“Recalling the Assembly will allow us to take necessary action against the virus and ensure MLAs can scrutinise the decision making processes so that we can get it right. Our communities are relying on us to protect them from this virus, so we must step up to the plate.”
