Oireachtas Social Protection Committee report – “a small step in the right direction”

People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy has responded to the Oireachtas Social Protection committee report which recommends keeping the pension age at 66.

The Dublin South West TD also welcomed calls from the Committee for wealth taxes to be examined by the Pensions Commission.

He said: “This report from the Committee is a small step in the right direction. People Before Profit would go further and bring the pension age back to 65. We feel that it is extremely unfair and disrespectful for people who have worked all their lives to expect them to go on to a transitionary payment.

“It is also positive to see that the committee is in favour of the Pensions Commission examining the idea of taxes on wealth. We can see now that even the ESRI are talking about taxes on wealth and inheritance. It is well beyond time that the government impose taxes on the obscene wealth of the richest individuals and companies in this society and use that money to give working people a decent retirement.”
