‘No Consume’ Water Notice On Three Blackrock Roads For A Week Suggest Major Problems With Irish Water’s Ability To Provide Safe Drinking Water

Richard Boyd Barrett TD to raise issue in Dáil this week

People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett has said that a ‘no consume’ water notice that has been in place for three roads in Stradbrook in Dublin provides further evidence of major problems with Irish Water’s ability to provide safe drinking water to people’s homes.

Deputy Boyd Barrett has been told that the ‘no consume’ notice has been placed on the water supply of the roads, where many elderly people live, because of the presence of manganese in the water supply.

The notice has been on the roads for over a week and Irish Water has not provided any indication to the residents about when it will be lifted.

Irish Water has also failed to provide a water tanker for an alternative water supply for the residents.

Deputy Boyd Barrett has contacted Irish Water and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council but has yet to receive a proper explanation for the failure in drinking water quality or a time-line for the problem to be resolved.

The Dún Laoghaire TD has said that he will raise this matter in the Dáil this week.

Richard Boyd Barrett TD said: “This situation where three roads in my constituency have been without drinkable water for over a week with almost zero engagement from Irish Water or the council is a disgrace. Following hot on the heels of the recent failures at water treatment plans in Dublin and Wexford, affecting the drinking water of hundreds of thousands of homes, this incident suggests that Irish Water has major problems guaranteeing safe drinking water to people’s homes. That’s a very serious problem.

“People who live on these roads have had to put up with a ‘no consume notice’ on their drinking water for a week due to the presence of manganese in the water and there has been no alternative water source provided. Many of these residents are elderly. It is an absolutely unacceptable situation.

“I will be writing to Minister O’Brien on this urgent matter and will be raising it in the Dáil this week.”
