With news of a 20% pay cut for construction workers working for BAM last week and the threat of other construction bosses following their lead, it is more important than ever to get organised.
There are still a huge number of construction workers not receiving legally agreed rates of pay set out in the last Sectoral Employment Order (SEO).
The next phase of the SEO, due to come into affect in October is now in the sights of the CIF and employers, they want to role back the SEO and drive down pay and conditions to save money.
These agreements are only ever as strong as the workers and unions who stand behind them!
Despite the huge threat to our livelihoods, many construction workers are un-unionised, many because of difficulties with bogus self-employment and many more because they see the weaknesses of some of the existing unions – who have failed to properly represent workers, opting for compromise and keeping the peace instead.
We need to build fighting construction unions that will take on the industry bosses to protect our SEO and improve our conditions!
