Israel’s Actions Threaten A Wider War

Israel’s strike against Iran is a further escalation in the possibility of a Middle East wide war.

Regardless of how on one regards the Iranian regime, Israel feels it can act with impunity. Not only has it launched a genocidal war against the population of Gaza, it has encouraged its settlers to murder local Palestinians in the West Bank.

It has bombed an Iranian consulate in Syria and regularly fires missiles into Southern Lebanon. In the past it has also invaded the latter country.

None of this could occur without the open support of the US.  It supplies it with weaponry to the tune of at least $3 billion a year. The US even has an official policy to ensure that Israel has ‘qualitative military superiority’ over its neighbours. In other words, Israel must always be better armed and able to defeat any potential rival in the area.

This military support is backed up with political support. Once again, for example, the US was the only country on the UN Security Council to deny Palestine full member status.

Despite all the mainstream propaganda which tries to cover up Israel’s crimes, it is a rogue state that is backed by the biggest imperialist power in the world.

People Before Profit has bever been a friend of the Iranian regime. We have invited activists who were involved in the Women, Life, Freedom protests into the Irish parliament because we support their demands. We understand that the Iranian regime will use an anti-imperialist rhetoric to crack down on the left and win the population to support an unpopular regime.

But none of this justifies Israel’s repeated attacks on Iranian facilities. Israel does not go to war to bring greater freedom to the Middle East – it operates as a watch dog, lashing out whenever it feels Western imperialist interests are threatened. Like any attack dog, it gets so used to aggression that it fights for its own reasons as well.

The EU has situated itself firmly in the US camp. EU leaders expressed their full solidarity with the people of Israel and condemned Iran’s attack, also emphasising their will to impose further sanctions against Iran. This is in sharp contrast to their inaction over the months of  Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

Brid Smith TD, People Before Profit’s candidate for the Dublin Euro constituency has warned that Israel’s dangerous maneuvers are increasing the danger of a Middle East wide war that coul eventually engulf the world.

We need to close Shannon airport to US Troops… now.
