On October 19th at 6:30PM, People Before Profit will hold a talk titled “Is there really no alternative to a system in chaos?” at the Ol’55 on Prospect Hill, featuring TD Richard Boyd Barrett and campaigner for Mayor Mamdani’s campaign Emma Bally. The event will be chaired by People Before Profit Rep Denman Rooke.
The talk aims to discredit the idea that there is no alternative to capitalism, and to paint a picture of what a safer, healthier, happier and more equitable future could look like. “As war, genocide, corruption and the rapidly accelerating climate crisis flood our lives daily, the Irish public are increasingly resisting the idea that this is the best we can hope for”, said Rooke.
“People are looking for a politics of vision, and realise that the dinosaurs in government can’t give them that. Which is why our membership is growing month on month, and why people are taking to the streets or picket lines in increasing numbers. ”
Rooke pointed out that the Public Budgetary Office, an independent entity at Leinster House, reported that People Before Profit’s alternative budget for 2026 would have vastly increase household incomes for 95% of people living, far outstripping the budgets proposed by Labour, Social Democrats or Sinn Fein.
"There are alternatives", said Rooke, "and we're going to fight for them.”
All are welcome, and we look forward to many interesting conversations afterwards.
