International Women's Day 2026

International Women's Day celebrates the historic gains made in the fight for equality. Today we prepare our forces for the struggle against authoritarianism, misogyny, genocide, war and poverty.

No Shamrock for a Rapist and a Warmonger!
Trump is a legally defined sexual predator.  The Epstein files – a who’s who of powerful men in capitalism – has shown the degree of acceptance of rape, of child abuse, of violent, sexually abusive behaviour at the top of society. Trump’s name appears in the files over 1000 times.

Trump has been accused by more than two dozen women of groping and rape. His administration represents a backlash against women’s rights. Yet Martin remains undeterred in his visit to Washington to bow the knee to Trump.

Also in the Epstein circle were Irish bankers and so-called ‘friends of Ireland’ Bill Clinton and George Mitchell - yet the Irish government had nothing to say when the story broke. This speaks volumes about our state’s woeful record on dealing with gender-based violence.

A new report has shown the average number of sexual offences reported in Ireland between 2019 and 2023 was 43% higher than the EU average. One in three women in Ireland suffer physical, psychological or sexual abuse from an intimate partner.  Services for victims of sexual violence are overstretched and underfunded.

And the social problems created by our government, in particular the housing crisis, makes things worse. Nine counties still have no refuge spaces for victims of sexual violence.

Martin shaking hands a convicted sex offender tells us how little they care – or do - about gender- based violence.

No to War
Trump is a war monger and genocide enabler. In 2025 he has bombed Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Iraq Yemen, Venezuela, and Iran (twice).  He is in lockstep with Netanyahu – with the genocide of Palestinians and Israel’s plans for regional dominance in the Middle East.  Now the shocking US-Israeli strikes on Iran have killed more than 1000 people, including 165 girls when an elementary school was bombed.

The whole region is being enveloped in war. EU leaders and the Irish government have gone along with it, as they did with the genocide in Gaza. The German Chancellor raised no objections during his recent visit to Trump. Martin will follow suit.

Shannon continues to be used for the US military, and the Irish government have imposed no restrictions on Irish trade and dealings with Israel. They still have not passed the Occupied Territories Bill.

International Women’s Day is linked to opposition to war.
On the eve of World War I, campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day; their mobilisation fed into revolutionary change. In 1914, women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women's solidarity.

In Ireland too the women in Cumann na mBan, the Irish Women’s Workers Union, the Irish Citizen Army, and the Irish Women’s Franchise League came together to resist moves to introduce conscription in Ireland. The Irish Neutrality League was set up when war broke out in 1914.

The anti-imperialist tradition is what we need to oppose our government’s attempts to draw Ireland in behind the western war mongers. We must be the voice for the majority of Irish people who do not want to see our neutrality further weakened.

The fact that Micheál Martin insists on going to plámás Trump in Washington shows how little regard he has for women, for Palestinians, for the people of Iran – and for the people of Ireland.  It is insulting to us all and we must oppose it.
