Government Climate Action Officially Dead

Bríd Smith TD declares the myth of government climate action officially dead with confirmation that Minister Bruton will place Shannon LNG on PCI list tomorrow

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith has said that the myth of the Irish government’s climate action is “officially dead” in response to the news that Minister Bruton will place the Shannon LNG project on the Projects of Common Interest (PCI) list tomorrow.

The TD was responding to the news which was reported in Green News.

She said: “This decision by Minister Bruton and the government to press ahead and place the Shannon LNG terminal on the PCI list tomorrow puts to bed any idea that the government are interested in climate action.

“The myth of Fine Geal’s so called climate action is officially dead.

“Despite what Leo Varadkar or Richard Bruton say the gas coming into Shannon will be very dangerous fracked gas. We have had confirmation for weeks from US activists, the company New Fortress Energy themselves and the EPA from Pennsylvania that this gas will be fracked gas. Fracking was banned in this country because of the dangers it poses to the environment and to communities. The government seem happy for these dangers to be the problem for communities in the US like Pennsylvania.

“At the Climate Action committee two weeks ago, we heard from experts such as Prof Robert Howarth, who is the most cited academic on the topic of methane gas, who said that all aspect of the LNG supply chain releases large amounts of methane which is a serious danger to the environment. Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2.

“Not only will this decision be a huge blow to the communities and activists in the US who are fighting fracking, but it will be a massive danger to the environment, the local community around the Shannon and Ireland’s emissions targets. This decision is a disgrace.”
