Edwin Poots move tonight is a retrograde one that flies in the face of what the majority of people here want. Poots has no mandate for moving to challenge the out workings of the protocol.
Gerry Carroll MLA says “all the evidence suggests that the majority of people care little about the protocol and instead want those in power to deal with the urgent issues that matter, such as the crippling cost of living crisis, the healthcare crisis, or the issue of low pay.
Instead of addressing the issues that really matter, Edwin Poots is playing sectarian games in an effort to distract from the internal crisis of the DUP—the latest example of this being the failure of Poots himself to be selected for nomination for election— and his announcement tonight smacks of a Minister in crisis who is scrambling to create another crisis in order to distract media headlines away from his own failures.
We should have no truck with these latest shenanigans and call them out for what they are; once again, DUP Ministers are further sectarianising politics to suit their own narrow self-interest, precisely at the time when we urgently need unity across the communal divide, to better the interests of ordinary people everywhere.”
