Free Public Transport

Dublin is the worst city in Europe for affordable public transport. That is the conclusion that Greenpeace came to after they carried out a comprehensive survey.

Greenpeace EU transport campaigner Lorelei Limousin said: “Affordable public transport is a necessity, but many governments, Ireland’s included, treat it like a luxury good.”

She must have been thinking of Eamonn Ryan who claimed that if there was free public transport people would make unnecessary journeys.

70 percent of the oil used in Europe comes from transport. If there were free public transport, we could cut down on carbon emissions, get people out of cars, and reduce traffic jams and air pollution.

It makes perfect sense. Invest in an increased bus fleet and introduce free public transport.
