Mandatory Hotel Quarantine needed to slow growth of Delta variant and allow vaccination programme to be fully implemented
People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith has called on the government to grant “nothing less than 100% redress” to the homeowners in Donegal and Mayo affected by mica.
The TD for Dublin South Central said that this was a shocking example of legacy issues stemming from the deregulation of the Celtic Tiger era. She also pointed out that as the pyrite scheme received 100% redress, so should the mica sufferers.
The TD offered her full support to the homeowners suffering from this issue and will be in attendance at the demonstration today which is due march from the Convention Centre in Dublin to Leinster House.
Speaking on the issue, Bríd Smith TD said: “This is a crisis of epic proportions for thousands of families. What these homeowners and families in Donegal and Mayo are going through is absolutely shocking. This is the bitter fruit and legacy of the deregulation of the Celtic Tiger era. The government need to give these people their full support. Nothing less than 100% redress will be good enough. If the government can pay of 100% redress for pyrite them there is an obligation for the people who are affected by mica to receive 100% redress also.
“If the state can bailout the banks overnight for €64 billion, it can bailout these families for a fraction of that sum. This is not a crisis of their making but is rooted in state policy that removed itself from any form of regulation over the entire building industry in the Celtic tiger era.”
People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy has called on the government to take effective action on the Delta variant as it poses a threat to people’s health, lives and the reopening of the country.
He said that the home quarantine measures that the government are proposing do not address the issue and that Mandatory Hotel Quarantine should be imposed to slow the growth of the variant and allow the vaccination programme to be fully implemented.
“The Delta variant presents a threat to people’s health, lives and our re-opening. If we don’t take effective action now, we will be facing a crisis in a few weeks’ time. The government’s proposal to extend home quarantine does not address the key issue. Many people do not have a home where they can isolate safely. It also does not deal with those who choose to ignore the home quarantine rules. Mandatory Hotel Quarantine worked to keep out the Brazilian variant. If the government acts now, it can dramatically slow the growth of the Delta variant and allow people to be fully vaccinated before it becomes dominant.”
