People Before Profit says: Join The Resistance, It’s Time To Revolt – March With People Before Profit, 1pm Parnell Sq.
The Cost of Living and Housing Crisis is a disaster for workers, pensioners, students, single parents and people with disabilities.
Everything us up: food prices, energy prices, rents and now mortgage repayments. The real value of wages, pensions and benefits is falling. Most people’s standard of living is being cut.
With rents rising and the removal of the eviction ban the housing crisis has deepened with record numbers now homeless.
There is no cost of living crisis for the rich. Two people in Ireland have more wealth than the bottom half of the population. Corporate profits are through the roof. While we struggle with rising energy costs ESB profits are up, by €157 million in the first 6 months of this year.
People before Profit has been central to the Cost of Living Coalition. We have pushed to build the widest resistance to the crisis.
We have a radical programme that would redistribute wealth, build houses, cut rents, nationalise the banks and energy companies and make public services, like health, education and childcare free to those who need them.
We would increase all social welfare benefits and pensions to €300 a week to lift people out of poverty. We would use the proceeds from a wealth tax to pay for it. We say workers need pay increases of at least 10%.
To make this a reality we need to build resistance in communities, colleges and workplaces now. Workers need to lodge pay claims and back them up with strike action. The passivity of union leaders needs to be challenged.
Students need to get organised to demand real action on student housing, fees and grants.
We need a housing movement to stand up to landlords and resist evictions.
We also need to get rid Fine Gael and Flanna Fáil and elect a Left Government that will challenge the corporations and the elite and build a society based on meeting the needs of the majority.
We want to build a people powered movement for socialist change.
