Today Fridays for Future and Young Friends of the Earth are protesting at the Department of Foreign Affairs at 1pm. They are calling on Biden to Stop Project Willow in Alaska.
Young Friends of the Earth have a post calling out Joe Biden for being two-faced on climate and we agree.
Just like his double standards on war and imperialism in Yemen and Palestine, Biden continues the work of Trump in serving American interests when it harms people directly like the people on North America who are fighting to stop Project Willow.
Signatures on the petition aganist Project Willow number over 5 million. Project Willow can be stopped by Biden.
Today he is in Ballina in County Mayo publicly basking in his Irish heritage to solidify his Irish American voter base, oblivious to climate battles fought here only an hour’s drive away from 2005-2018 the grassroots Shell to Sea resistance campaign.
Activists there fought gardaí, the state and a fossil fuel corporation. The connection is so close and the contradictions so apparent: the urgent activity and commitment of Ireland’s grassroots Rossport campaigners 2005-2018 on one hand, and the demoralising actionless green talk of Biden on Project Willow in Ballina today, the in-government Green Party and the tax laws ConocoPhilips is using in Cork to increase profits and drill for more fossil fuels.
The link between escalating climate change and the cynical hypocrisy of the US and Irish Government leaders is evident. We don’t need the hopeless greenwashing of the Green Party here, or Democrats like Biden there.
Peace, and ecosocialism, will like all real lasting change come from people powered movements like Shell to Sea, Right2Water, the fight against incineration, and People Before Profit’s to Keep It In The Ground campaign and bill. Not all are successful. The powers that be are organised and the climate campaigners must be organised too.
People Before Profit is the best party on climate change in Ireland and we stand shoulder to shoulder with activists in Young Friends of the Earth calling out Biden’s hypocrisy. It unites activists, gives them a voice and has a real plan towards a Just Transition and a united ecosocialist future for Ireland.
This is a moment for action on climate change and Biden is demonstrating where his loyalty lies and what the role of US Government is in the global fossil fuel industry. Ireland is not innocent. The company in charge the project operates an office in Cork for tax avoidance. Our government designed tax policies to make it easier for companies like ConocoPhilips to profit from whatever they do regardless if it is killing life on the planet or not.
Change comes from below that’s why we say consistently Keep It In The Ground here and keep it in the ground everywhere. Today we are with the activists here and around the world telling Biden Enough of your double standards: Stop Project Willow in Alaska.
