Nearly half of all deaths from Covid-19 have been in nursing homes. That figure may even be an underestimate as there are problems with official death certificates.

Ireland’s nursing homes are mainly in private hands and international research shows that for profit nursing homes had a higher rate of infections – even before Covid 19 struck.

The government has added to the problem by not providing protective equipment for health care staff.
