Workers Rights Can No Longer Be Denied

As part of its ‘Trade Union Week’ People Before Profit held actions in Derry, Belfast, Dublin and Cork today at 1pm. The Derry action was held at the Guildhall.

People Before Profit Cllr Eamonn McCann said,

“We face an unprecedented set of health, economic and social challenges. To meet these challenges working class communities must be afforded their full rights to protection.

People Before Profit’s 32 County Trade Union Week is an effort to promote and encourage people to join a trade union. It is every workers democratic right to have a collective voice in the workplace and outside it. We have the right to walk off a job individually or collectively if it is unsafe. We have a right to better pay, terms and conditions. This is also called respect and equality.

People Before Profit is also bringing forward bills in Stormont and the Dáil to undo anti-workers rights legislation. In the North this refers to Thatcher era laws that have been a devolved matter for decades. Kept on the books by those who prefer to see us divided.

I encourage people to join a union today and to give their full backing to People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll’s private members bill – the Trade Union Freedom Bill. It’s time for the trade union movement to shake off the shackles and become a vehicle of hope for those in work, the unemployed and vulnerable.”
