Why Are They Commemorating Partition?

Michael D Higgins read the popular mood – he was not going to a religious event to commemorate partition.

Ireland was divided by the British Empire – despite the fact that in 1918 its population voted overwhelmingly to form a republic. The creation of a separate Northern State in defiance of the wishes of the majority led to major sectarian conflict and pogroms.

It also produced two conservative states that were mirror images of its other – a Protestant state for a Protestant people and one dominated by Bishops in the South.

Many people are now waking up to this nightmare. But a government, run by Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, have deaf ears. What a disgrace!
