We Take Pride In Our Community Says People Before Profit

The level of support and enthusiasm for flying the Rainbow flag shows the real Pride that people in Waterford have in our community, and the desire to reject the bigots who destroyed flags raised outside the City Hall on behalf of the people of Waterford, says People Before Profit.

We encourage everyone to answer the homophobic hate with defiance and solidarity.  We stand with the Pride of the Déise Committee, who said they are delighted with the “great engagement locally and nationally with our events and virtual parade.  Citizens have painted Mt. Misery to show their support and it is great to be part of that tradition in Waterford as well.  The actions of the citizens of Waterford are showing their beautiful proud colours in their businesses and homes right now.  This is important for young LGBTQ people, for people struggling with their identity and it will reach community members who are experiencing isolation as well.”

Following the attacks on the flags, and the posting of homophobic messages in the City Centre, concern has been raised for peoples’ safety.  This is a time for solidarity and confidence, believes PBP.  The decision to illuminate the City Hall with rainbow spotlights was an ingenious display of unity.  As a more permanent symbol of inclusion and respect, PBP calls on the Council to place a rainbow crossing at the Civic Office site on the Mall.

It was said that the success of the Marriage Equality campaign would depend on the kindness of strangers.  In fact, it was successful because of the support and friendship of neighbours.
