Waterford Needs A Rainbow Crossing

People Before Profit Waterford are calling on the local council to install a Rainbow Crossing in Waterford to show constant solidarity with our LGBTQ citizens. Recent events in Sligo show that Pride is still an important protest against those who threaten equality with violence and harassment.

Local spokesperson Una Dunphy says, ”As long as hate exists we must stand solidly against it. We must not give it air or space to grow. A permanent symbol of solidarity is required to show our dedication to and nurturing of diversity in our community. Waterford recently held a well-attended vigil in solidarity with the victims in Sligo, a Rainbow Crossing would be a permanent symbol of support to show how steadfast this support is locally”

“Waterford was the only city to have a Pride flag ripped down and burned twice. This must remind us that Pride is still a protest against inequality, division and hatred. As a society, we must endeavour to do all we can to challenge this. A Rainbow Crossing is a simple but strong symbol.

Una continues,” We were told last year that this couldn’t happen but it had happened in Derry and since last year more Rainbow Crossings have become permanent fixtures in Galway, Limerick and Wicklow.

While Waterford is slow to react to national moves, we will ask again that the Council reflect on their decision and change their minds, which can only be good for the reputation of Waterford as a diverse city in which to live and work.”
