The United States Embassy today issued a statement today on the Israeli Settlements Bill 2026 claiming that it could have ‘real unintended consequences, particularly for nearly 1,000 US companies and the hundreds of thousands of Irish jobs tied to them’. The statement also said Ireland should ‘avoid pushing similarly unhelpful initiatives at EU level’.
Paul Murphy said:
“Today’s statement from the US embassy is an outrageous threat against Ireland. It is totally unacceptable for the Trump administration to make such threats and they must receive a robust government response.
“The Irish people have shown deep-felt solidarity with the people of Palestine, a sense of solidarity that is rooted in our own history of colonisation and occupation.
“People here have applied sustained pressure on successive Irish governments over many years to sanction Israel, and finally we have the Israeli Settlements Bill. It's much more limited in its effect than most people wanted, but the Irish people will not accept any bullying from Trump and his cronies.
“The US, under the Trump administration and the Biden administration before it, has been Israel’s main arms supplier. Israel’s genocide in Gaza could not have been carried out with such devastating effect and sustained for such an extended period without US arms.
“Ireland will not take any lectures from a government that has armed and continues to arm genocide. The Irish people have been threatened before and have always stood their ground. We will do so again now.
“There must be no more government kowtowing to the US. It's unthinkable that the government would invite Trump to Ireland, and the government should immediately call in the US ambassador and tell him in no uncertain terms that US threats will not be tolerated and that Trump needs to back-off.”
