Tim Stevens to run for People Before Profit Alliance in Roscommon

FOR ALMOST A DECADE, Tim Stevens has worked as a nurse at the Sacred Heart Hospital, providing residential care for Roscommon’s older citizens.

A dedicated health professional, Tim knows what it takes to raise standards and improve services. He understands the suffering that cutbacks cause.

Tim is standing as your People Before Profit candidate because he firmly believes that together we can change our society for the better.

THE PROBLEM: SYSTEMIC FAILURE
The centralisation of government in Kildare Street ensures that local council proposals to meet current economic challenges, howsoever laudable, represent no more than a shifting of the deck-chairs aboard the Titanic. Centralisation overburdens national decision-making, weakening the government’s capacity to decide national policy whilst simultaneously depriving local councils of the authority to determine local priorities [See The Barrington Report (1991)].

CAMPAIGN FOR BETTER GOVERNMENT
Now is the time to challenge decision-making based on ‘friends, family and favours’. In order to meet the current dilemmas facing our society, local government in Roscommon requires real participation. To this end, Tim stands for:
· regular public meetings with popular involvement in all council decisions
· a directly elected Mayor with a cap on the salaries of public officials

LOCAL SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Equality is vital for health, creativity and real prosperity. Now is the time to challenge inequality in our community. In one of the most unequal countries in Europe, we need to redouble efforts to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens. To this end, Tim stands for:
· a campaigning council, central to the defence and promotion of all public services in Roscommon

RESPONSIBLE ECONOMIC RECOVERY
Now is the time to challenge profit-driven irresponsibility in our economy. To this end, Tim stands for:
· People Before Profit’s ‘Alternative Economic Agenda’ (see www.people-before-profit.org/node/86)
· the creation of a ‘Programme for Local Economic Recovery’

Throughout the country, People Before Profit are organising for a different kind of politics and a different kind of society.

Last October, the pensioners showed that People Power can win. Now is the time for the people of Roscommon to stand and be counted.

Tim Stevens is running for the council elections on June 5th. A vote for him is a vote to start an open conversation about the kind of future we all want to have.

Thank you for your time.
