THINK OF THE VULNERABLE NOT THE VOTE. WHY THE FREE HEALTH CARE FOR UNDER 6’S IS THE WRONG APPROACH – People Before Profit Kerry

Speaking of the recent statement by the National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP) calling on GPs to reject the Government's proposal for free health care for children under 6, Brian Finucane, of People Before Profit Kerry, said, 'I fully support the recommendation of the NAGP and the rationale they outline. Healthcare and medical support should be provided based on need not on age. The NAGP says it has an ethical and moral responsibility to prevent the introduction of the scheme. I believe the scheme is yet another example of this government prioritising votes over any ethical or moral responsibility.

'Do I believe in free health care for children under 6? Yes I do. But I believe healthcare should be free to all at the point of access. Access to essential services should not be controlled or dictated by your financial circumstances. No adult or child in the State, particularly those with long term, life controlling, life limiting, or life threatening conditions, be they related to physical or mental health, should have to pay for access to essential healthcare services! If the government can find funds to save the banks and the bond holders, they can find the funds to provide for the sick, for the disabled, for the vulnerable, and for our elderly citizens….and if they can't find the funds then they should look for a greater contribution from those individuals and businesses who benefit from significant financial gain in Ireland!'
