Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is being accused by the Brazilian Senate of being primarily responsible for the devastating impact of Covid-19 in Brazil. A Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry established in the Senate is investigating the massive numbers of Covid deaths – now over 465,000.
Bolsonaro spread denialist theories around Covid mortality rates from the very beginning of the pandemic. While the virus was ripping through Brazilian communities, he continued to downplay its danger.
The chair of the Commission Dimas Tadeu Covas reported last week that Bolsonaro refused to buy over 20 million doses of the vaccine manufactured by the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo state. He added that “Brazil could have been the first country in the world to have started a vaccination program”. Butantan has been manufacturing the CoronaVac vaccine in partnership with China since late December.
Last Saturday, the 29M movement mobilised across 200 cities and 14 countries, with Brazilians and others protesting against the necropolitics that have devastated Brazil.
