People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll has called on Hovis to pay workers what they deserve. He said:
“Hovis must do better than the derisory pay offer on the table. This is a highly profitable company, one that made tens of millions in profit prior to COVID and likely seen its profits soar during the pandemic.
“The Hovis workers were essential while the rest of society stayed safely at home. I was proud to join them on their first day of strike action and we continue to support their efforts. This is not the reward they deserve for working throughout a pandemic – this pay offer is an insult.
“If the Hovis workers can win this fight, it would set a local precedent for others to challenge management attempts to pay as little as possible in current circumstances.
“The Hovis strike has the full support of People Before Profit.”
