Press Release: Shannon Lng – People Before Profit Welcome Expected Abp Rejection Of LNG Terminal

People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy has welcomed the news that An Bord Pleanála are expected to reject planning permission for the Shannon LNG terminal.

Deputy Murphy, who is the new People Before Profit representative on the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment and Climate Action, congratulated An Bord Pleanála on the decision and said that the construction of LNG facilities would be “completely contrary to Ireland’s climate goals and international climate commitments.” He said this was a good day for climate action in Ireland.

People Before Profit has been a leading voice against the construction of LNG infrastructure and the Shannon terminal. The party has in the past tabled Private Members Bills to ban the construction of fossil fuel infrastructure and LNG terminals.

He said: “This expected decision from An Bord Pleanála is a welcome decision and a good day for climate action in this country. It vindicates the work of many environmental campaigners who have opposed this infrastructure because they know the damage this facility would do to the environment. A facility such as this would be completely contrary to Ireland’s climate goals and international climate commitments. The government should now implement a ban on any future fossil fuel infrastructure.”
