The latest Red C poll shows that the country is split evenly between supporting a left coalition or a grand coalition of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael. Exactly 26% of the people backed one of those options.
Significantly, just 20% of Sinn Féin voters want to join Fianna Fáil in government and an overwhelming 61% want the party to form a left government.
Sinn Féin spokespersons should, therefore, not be throwing in the towel by claiming that they need to get in with Fianna Fáil.
People Before Profit is re-iterating its call to all parties to rule out joining Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael in coalition.
Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael should be told abstain in a vote for Taoiseach so that a minority left government can be formed. Varadkar says he wants to lead the opposition and put the left to the test. Well, let him stand aside then!
A minority left government could take clear and decisive action – such as restoring the pension aged to 65 or imposing a rent freeze. It could seek popular support for its measures and challenge the Right to pull it down for another election.
But to achieve this, we will need to get onto the streets in big numbers to say Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael Out of Government: Real Change Now.
