Plea For Greens To Fight New EU Rules On Gas And Nuclear Energy

Minister Ryan urged to object as deadline passes on new Taxonomy

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith has urged the Green Party and Minister Eamon Ryan to “stand up for the climate movement and object to the new EU taxonomy which classifies gas and nuclear projects as sustainable.”

EU states have until today (June 11th) to raise objections to the taxonomy adopted by the EU.

Deputy Smith said: “We know this will see private finance funnel into unsustainable gas and nuclear projects and runs the risk of locking us into fossil fuel infrastructure for decades. It flies in the face of all known science which is clear we can’t build new fossil fuel infrastructure and have any hopes of limiting temperature increases. We know this and yet this Government remains silent as this betrayal of the climate movement takes place in broad day light.

“I am pleading with Minister Ryan to use his position, to stand up for climate and the climate movement and object to this disastrous policy.”
