People Before Profit Welcome Ballymurphy Inquest Verdict

People Before Profit welcome today’s announcement from the Ballymurphy Massacre inquest, and in particular the conclusion that all those killed were entirely innocent of any wrongdoing.

Today, the eyes of the world can see what people in Ballymurphy have known all along, that in August 1971 the British Army murdered innocent people and then tried to cover it up over many long years.

It has taken courage and determination to challenge that narrative but today’s announcement has vindicated the long-fought campaign led by the families of those killed. In recognising the innocence of all victims of the Ballymurphy massacre, this verdict proves that their fight was justified and righteous.

We hope it can deliver some comfort to the families after fifty years. When the state murders innocent citizens it is in the interests of everybody to seek truth and justice. I want to say a huge thank you to the Ballymurphy families. They never gave up their courageous, indomitable struggle and deserve widespread praise for how they have conducted themselves against all odds and over many years.
