People Before Profit To Propose The Maximum 15% Reduction In Local Property Tax At DLRCC Meeting Tonight

DLR Cllr Halpin lashes out Fine Geal and Fianna Gail hypocrisy

Tonight, at a meeting of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, People Before Profit councillor, Melisa Halpin, will propose a full reduction of 15% of the Local Property Tax.

Cllr Halpin also called out Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael councillors over their call for a reduction of 15%. She said that this represented “blatant hypocrisy” as their policy in government is to increase the LPT.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s council meeting, Cllr Halpin said: “Tonight, I will be proposing a reduction of the Local Property Tax by the maximum allowed of 15%. The Local Property Tax is an unfair and unjust tax on people who are effectively punished because of where they live, regardless of their income. We oppose the property tax outright as we do not believe a tax on the family home is justified. Instead we call for a tax on wealth and properties, excluding the family home, over €1 million.

“The blatant hypocrisy of the Fianna Fáil/Fine Geal DLR councillors, proposing a 15% reduction, beggars belief as in government they have introduced legislation which would see a rise in the property tax for roughly 37% of home owners, the increase will be at least €90 per year.  It will also bring about 100,000 new homeowners into the tax band.

“It is also astounding to see Fianna Fáil/Fine Geal councillors offering rhetorical support for PUP recipients, whilst at the same time their government are lining up to slash the PUP at the next opportunity.”
