People Before Profit MLA Slams Stormont Cuts To Advice Service & Calls For Funding To Be Restored

As the Stormont Assembly debate a motion on welfare support, MLAs will also vote on an amendment from PBP MLA Gerry Carroll which demands funding cuts for advice centres is reversed. Speaking before the debate, Mr Carroll said:

“It is abhorrent that cuts are being made to welfare advice services as people face economic peril due to the mishandling of the COVID pandemic. This cut could see dozens of advice jobs lost and vulnerable people left on the hook waiting for help.

“This is only the latest attack on social security since the DUP, Sinn Féin and the Alliance Party introduced crippling welfare reform measures to the North. We need a social security system which protects people but the latest Stormont budget will thrust more into poverty.

“In my amendment I am calling on Deirdre Hargey to reverse these cuts and find the funding to save welfare advice centres and jobs and I hope other parties will back me.”
