People Before Profit has called for "urgent intervention" from the trade union movement in response to a developing pogrom in Belfast
In a letter to NIC-ICTU, the party has urged trade unions to stage "demonstrations, community actions and work stoppages" to protect their members.
The letter reads:
FAO NIC-ICTU
I write to you to call for urgent intervention from NIC-ICTU in response to the recently developing pogrom in the North.
The trade union movement will share our concerns about the obscene violence meted out to our migrant brothers and sisters following the horrific attack in North Belfast.
The victim of the Kinnaird Avenue attack remains in our thoughts, and I join trade unionists everywhere in expressing sympathy and solidarity with him. That this tragic incident has been used to sow hatred and division in working class communities is appalling.
We are now entering a third successive summer where racist mobs have inflicted untold levels of violence on minorities here, endangering the lives of countless workers who keep our society afloat. What occurred in Ballymena last year, and what is presently underway here, can only be described as a pogrom. Therefore, the trade union movement must act.
On behalf of People Before Profit, I urge NIC-ICTU to take urgent action to protect its members and oppose a further drift into division and violence.
The trade union movement represents hundreds of thousands of workers here and must use all the power at its disposal to thwart the racist thugs who wish to divide us. This should include demonstrations, community actions and work stoppages where necessary.
We trust you share in our belief that the defence of workers' rights, the fight better living conditions, the fight for housing, the fight for public services and the fight against racism are one and the same. We therefore appeal to you to give this matter your utmost attention.'
