People Before Profit Bill To Extend The Ban On Evictions

A bill will be introduced in the Dáil next Wednesday to extend the ban on evictions. At the moment nearly 60% of evictions occur because landlords want to sell a property. They know that house prices are starting to fall and hope to cash in.

Focus Ireland claims that ‘landlords leaving the market and evicting their tenants

to ensure the best return on their investment, is the primary cause of family homelessness’.

People Before Profit aim to protect tenants through the Eviction Ban 2022.

This asserts that a housing emergency should be declared for the next 12 months. During that year, tenants cannot be evicted unless there is evidence of anti-social behaviour or damage to property.

The bill also contains a clause that would allow the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage to extend the emergency ban for a further period if they deem it in the public interest.

This is a vital measure that will give tenants minimum but temporary security. It is the only possible answer to a housing crisis.

Please ensure that your local TD is voting for this bill.
