The People Before Profit Alliance welcomes the reversal of the decision to drastically curtail the Derry-Dublin bus service.
Following the revelation of a plan to reduce the number of buses from 11 to five a day from the beginning of January, bus drivers have protested through their unions and disputed the necessity for the cut-backs. The unions’ intervention, plus public protest, has resulted in Bus Eireann and Ulsterbus backing off from the cut-back plan.
The current service, including the 11pm from Dublin which has made evening events in Dublin accessible to people in the North West, will be maintained. The retention of the service will also continue to make Dublin Airport accessible.
However, the threat to the service hasn’t gone away. The pressure, coming mainly from Dublin, may well be renewed in the New Year. People Before Profit will continue to keep a close eye on developments.
