The long-awaited regeneration of Oliver Bond Flats is to be scrapped by the Department of Housing.

People Before Profit Dublin Central by-election candidate Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin condemned the decision and demanded that the government put the funds in place to enable the full regeneration without any further delay.

People Before Profit Dublin Central by-election candidate Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin said, “The community of Oliver Bond flats has been waiting for 15 years for regeneration. The damp, poorly ventilated living conditions for many there are an indictment of the chronic lack of investment by Dublin City Council."

Hazel De Nortúin a People Before Profit councillor in Dublin South Central recalls, “The Taoiseach visited Oliver Bond flats in 2020 and promised the residents full regeneration. Now Micheál Martin has broken that promise, just like so many of his promises."

Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin drew connections across the city, “Severe maintenance problems are common across flat complexes for which Dublin City Council is responsible. For example, we’ve been speaking to residents in Sheridan Court in Dublin 1 who experienced flooding in January. This caused severe damage to multiple ceilings, but the Council has still not carried out the repairs that are urgently required. This is making life a misery for residents. There are many more examples across Dublin of lack of essential maintenance for extended periods.

Hazel De Nortúin said, “Today the Oliver Bond community is shocked and angry at the disgraceful news that the regeneration has been cancelled. No one should be living with rat infestations and in damp and dangerous living conditions. This community needs investment and support, not further neglect and betrayals.

“This shameful decision must be reversed and the government must put the funds in place for the urgently needed regeneration of the Oliver Bond flat complex”.
