Pressure is mounting on TDs to vote to extend the eviction ban. But some are thinking of bizarre excuses to sit on the fence.
Green Party TDs are wrestling with their consciences claiming that if only the government helped tenants to buy out their landlords, the lifting of the eviction ban would be ok.
The Rural Independents wants to squeeze out a few more concession for landlords. Sean Canney, Galway East TD and landlord of six properties proclaims that ‘landlords are not villains’.
Nobody said they were – it is just that state policy protects them rather than tenants.
They represent just 3% of the Irish population but are able to get the government to lift an eviction ban. The big excuse is that the eviction ban is pushing landlords out of the market.
But they don’t burn down their houses – and so their tenants should not be forced onto the street.
Let’s give them the message – there is NOWHERE to go. Keep the eviction ban.
