Minister Must Make the Decision to Cancel the Leaving Cert

People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny says: “Minister must make the decision to Cancel the Leaving Cert now and put students out of their misery”

Latest ISSU survey shows that 8 out of 10 students agree that it should be cancelled

Dublin Mid-West TD Gino Kenny today called for the Minister for Education to cancel the Leaving Certificate.

He said:” I have repeatedly called for the exam to be cancelled. Students have suffered profound stress and anxiety as a result of the Government’s failure to take decisive action on the issue. This has been added to by events in the last two days. Its now clear the exam cannot proceed safely and the Minister should now make the decision.

“The most recent student survey shows that we must listen to our young people and act immediately to alleviate the mental anguish that is being caused by delaying the inevitable.
“I have been contacted by many students not only from my own constituency but from around the country imploring me to intervene on their behalf by urging the Minister to cancel the Leaving Certificate exams.  We all know the Leaving Cert exams put huge pressure and stress on students anyway. But add in the stress, anxiety and uncertainty of the unprecedented public health emergency and it is easy to see why so many students are finding it all too overwhelming.

“I urge Minister McHugh to announce the decision to cancel the Leaving Cert exams and immediately look at putting alternative measures in place that will ensure that our students have the best outcomes in terms of their future learning and employment.”
