People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy has said that the construction of the proposed Glanbia plant in Kilkenny would run counter to Ireland’s climate obligations.
The TD said that the construction of such a plant, which would use up an incredible amount of Ireland’s carbon budget, was at odds with Ireland’s need to drastically reduce its carbon emissions and even the government’s Climate Bill.
He said: “If Ireland were to allow this plant to be built it would have a very damaging impact on our international emissions obligations set down in the Paris Agreement.
“It is deeply ironic that the government has made a big song and dance about their Climate Bill and yet they are willing to allow this cheese plant to go ahead which would roughly take up 2% of our 2030 emissions targets.”
