Responding to reports of an attack on the Fountain Estate and Memorial Hall, People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin said,
"The attacks on the Memorial Hall and the Fountain on Thursday night have been widely condemned, and rightly so.
It goes without saying that this doesn't in anyway reflect on the vast majority of people in Derry who would not endorse, support or defend what happened. In fact, they're sickened by it.
People Before Profit consistently appeal for people not to engage in sectarianism.
Some of those condemning the attacks the loudest are also the most determined to keep working class communities divided. They want an Us and Them narrative.
They want to maintain sectarian antagonism because its erosion is a threat to their project and power.
Young people have been involved in escalating tit-for-tat sectarianism over many months but funding for Youth Services has been cut. This hurts working-class children from all communities and creates a void.
The only beneficiaries of sectarianism and bonfire racism are elites profiting from poverty wages, weak workers rights legislation and the impoverishment of working-class people from all backgrounds.
We have different backgrounds but there is only one working-class.
We can only improve the lot of all working-class people and undermine the foundations of Stormont's institutionalised sectarianism by fighting to put class before creed.
We need a united fight from working-class people of Bogside and the Fountain Estate against cuts to Youth Services, schools and apprenticeships."
