People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll has responded to the PSNI’s confirmation that the seizure of explosive devices in the Shankill area is being investigated as extreme right-wing terrorism.
Carroll said:“This is the largest haul of weaponry linked to the far right ever found here, and it comes after three years of racist riots that have driven families out of their homes and left children afraid to walk to school.”
“This should be a wake-up call for everyone. The real threat to our communities comes from the far right. It does not come from residents on the Garvaghy Road, from peaceful protesters, or from the anti-racists who have stood up again and again to defend their neighbours. Yet those are the people too often treated as the problem."
“For the last few weeks we have heard various intelligence reports and anonymous briefings referring to 'dissident' arms on Garvaghy Road without any evidence presented. But here we have actual weapons found by someone who holds far-right ideas. It’s these people and this type of politics that is a real danger to community cohesion.”
“The far right is organising across these islands. Its figures openly praise the disorder here and draw inspiration from it. Their aim is to turn working class people against each other, and to blame migrants for a housing crisis and a broken health service that were caused by decades of austerity and profiteering."
“The residents of the Shankill who were forced out of their homes this weekend deserve safety. So does every family targeted in the racist attacks of recent summers. We need a serious response to far-right organising here, and a political fight against the conditions it feeds on.”
