Gerry Carroll: “Executive Incapable Of Leading Through Crisis”

Speaking as the Stormont Executive  fails to agree a path forward for restrictions once again, People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll said:

”The latest episode of Stormont’s Shambolic Approach to COVID-19 is arguably the most dangerous yet. I am appalled at the use of communal vetoes to block medically advised restrictions.

”The DUP is acting unconscionably by seeking to re-open the hospitality sector against warnings that it would lead to more deaths. Of course, Sinn Féin were calling for hospitality to reopen just two days ago. U-turns, indecision, skewed priorities – all synonymous with Stormont but in the midst of a pandemic, this behaviour is deplorable.

”These people should never be forgiven for their role in this pandemic. From slavishly following Boris Johnson, toying with herd immunity, incurring a second wave, and failing to financially support those impacted, they have proven themselves incapable of leading us through this crisis.

“Restrictions on work must be maintained in line with the best medical advice, but just as crucial is the need for the Executive to come forward with financial provisions to protect workers and small businesses while they cannot open.

”The secret backroom horse-trading over restrictions should come to an end. The Executive parties must come clean about where they stand on restrictions and publish the relevant scientific evidence. If, after Sinn Féin’s u-turn, it is only the DUP who oppose that advice, they should be publicly hung out to dry.”
