People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll has condemned the attempted murder of a police officer in Omagh, accusing the perpetrators of trying to “sow disunity” amongst communities.
The West Belfast representative said: “I unreservedly condemn this senseless and callous attack and send my thoughts to all who have been traumatised by it.
This brutal and terrifying shooting was carried out without the slightest concern for those, mostly children, in the vicinity.
Such violence is reckless, reactionary, and serves no legitimate purpose.
Those politicians who have courted the opinions of criminal or paramilitary gangs are hypocritical in their condemnation. There has been plenty of condemnation, but no consistency from establishment parties like the DUP, who continue their cosy relationship with paramilitary groups.
While it is yet unclear who carried out the shooting, their actions are rejected and abhorred by the vast majority here.
Those responsible are trying to sow disunity and fear amongst our communities, but we must see their heedless actions for what they are. These attacks are isolated and intended to exert influence where the perpetrators are not wanted.
I would take this opportunity to call for unity and for calm.”
