A special briefing document from top civil servants in the Department of Defence says that the EU is in ‘full war preparation mode’.
It predicts that Poland, which will take over the EU Council's presidency, will press countries to increase defence spending. Poland is devoting 4.6% of its budget to war preparations.
The briefing paper argues that as the EU prepares for war, Ireland’s position of neutrality will become more difficult.
The briefing document will alarm many people who think the EU is a progressive federation promoting worldwide peace. Instead, top Irish civil servants reveal that the EU is preparing for a future war.
Ireland should stay totally out of these manoeuvres. It should be a voice for peace and denounce warmongering from the big powers. The traditional policy of neutrality has become even more important than ever.
Yet the briefing aims to further erode this policy because it embarrasses Irish leaders when they go to Brussels.
We need a big popular movement to stop us being dragged into future wars.
