As we draw towards the end of the hottest summer on record, the effects of climate change are becoming rapidly more evident. From the uncontrollable fires in the Arctic circle to the devastating floods in Kathmandu, from the rapid melting of the Greenland ice sheet to the scorching heat waves being experienced around the world, it is clear that a climate emergency is no longer a future catastrophe to guard against but a reality that must be faced up to right now.
Yet while the world burns the fossil fuel companies, the major corporations and the ruling political classes that protect them continue to extract fossil fuels from the ground and to push for constant expansion of the economy. The measures they do take such as the imposition of carbon taxes are surface level changes that only serve to punish ordinary people and absolve the main culprits from blame.
Capitalism has been the root cause of the climate crisis and has failed to provide an escape route. The time has come for radical action to take on the status quo and prevent total planetary destruction.
In the run-up to the Global Climate Strike on September 20th, People Before Profit will be running eco-socialist workshops to discuss what an ecosocialist economy might look like and how we can build the movements that can challenge capitalism. Workshops are open to all.
