Education Minister And Government Accused Of Trying To “Divide And Rule” Over Schools Reopening

Shameful attempt to blame workers and unions of Government failure

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith has called on Education Minister Norma Foley TD to stop the propaganda war against teachers and SNAs and instead deal with the substantial issues and concerns raised by workers over the proposed reopening of schools.

The TD said: “The attempt by the government was effectively an attempt to set parents of vulnerable children at odds with teachers and SNAs when the blame for the present fiasco lay squarely at the feet of the department and Norma Foley TD.

“The attempt to open in a one size fits all fashion failed two weeks ago and its failing again. The Minister needs to allow for real consultation at school level to see what can be reopened for those vulnerable children.

“They have had nine months to deal with the substantial issues at the heart of the schools crisis including poorly ventilated classes and buildings, overcrowding and inadequate online resources; trying to bully teachers or SNAs to fit the Government plan is not acceptable.”
