People Before Profit Alliance (PBPA) Councillor Brid Smith calls on Government to go
At its meeting tonight Dublin City Council voted no confidence in the government. The motion proposed by PBPA Cllr Brid Smith and Independent Cllr Ciaran Perry states:
“This council records a vote of no confidence in the Fianna Fail/Green Party Government. This Government is presiding over the greatest economic and financial crises in the history of the state.
Rather than making those responsible pay, the government are demanding that those who are not in any way responsible, the poor, and those on low to middle incomes, shoulder the burden, while at the same time overseeing a massive transfer of wealth to bail out banks and developers.
This council condemns the government for the drastic consequences that the cuts in local authority funding are having on the provision of services at Council level. These cuts will impact most on the most disadvantaged areas and on the most vulnerable within them”.
After the vote Cllr Smith, who is the People Before Profit Alliance (PBPA) Candidate in the Dublin Mayoral election, said
“This awful government should resign. The have presided over rocketing levels of unemployment and have done nothing to stimulate job creation. Indeed they are wrecking the economy and our society. At the same time as handing over billions to banks they have cut social welfare rates and the pay of many low paid public servants including many council workers.
Many council services are being cut because of the failure of this government to adequately fund local services. These cuts have the biggest impact on those who have least.
Recent opinion polls have shown that the public have no confidence in this government. Its time now for a general election so that the people can let this government know what they really think of it. The Dail should vote tomorrow to give the electorate their right to pass judgment on this government”
