A motion by People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin to Derry and Strabane Council calling for an immediate cessation of the genocidal siege on Gaza and the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador passed on Wednesday evening.
The motion read in full:
“Council will write to the Irish and British government to support the call for an immediate cessation of the bombardment and genocidal siege of Gaza; and for the immediate expulsion of Israeli ambassadors.”
It was voted through with the support of Independents and the SDLP.
Fortunately, the motion passed despite Sinn Féin speaking against it and refusing to vote for it.
Nearly 7000 people in Gaza have been killed by IDF bombs, including thousands of children. Israel is starving Gaza’s 2.3 inhabitants.
Joe Biden is telling Israel to keep up the bombing and is holding up the IDF Gaza ground invasion in order to increase US military capacity in the region.
Israel doesn’t listen to pleading. We need the kinds of sanctions and boycotts that brought down apartheid South Africa to stop this genocide.
