People Before Profit Galway activists Denman Rooke and Kiran Emrich have announced a demo calling for an end to the bombing of Iran by American and Israeli forces which started over the weekend. The demo will take place on Monday 2nd March at 6pm in Eyre Square.
The demo has been called to coincide with Irish Anti-War Movement demos also happening at 6pm in Dublin, Belfast and Derry and is to send a message to the Irish and British governments that we will not accept our governments being complicit in the ongoing and illegal attack on Iran.
Kiran Emrich, a long time anti-war activist says 'We are seeing the same lies being told about Iran having weapons of mass destruction as were said about Iraq in 2003 to justify the American invasion then. Just as with Iraq in 2003, there is no justification for an invasion of Iran, which is about regime change and stealing resources such as oil. The ongoing attacks have already caused countless civilian deaths including dozens in a school, and have further destabilised the entire Middle East region, endangering millions of people.'
Denman Rooke says 'The Irish and British governments have gone along with these illegal attacks on Iran by allowing the US military to use Shannon airport as a transit point for troops and weapons while British military bases in the Middle East have helped the operations. People all over these islands are standing up and saying we do not support our governments dragging us into this war, there must be a peaceful resolution to the situation.
'It is not up to the American or Israeli governments to decide who governs in Iran, any decision on the Iranian government is for the Iranian people to decide. The demo will include contributions from others on the left furthering our commitment to work together as we face into a by-election campaign in Galway.'
